About the Greater Hazelwood Neighborhood Commitment

Pitt’s commitment to Greater Hazelwood is an ongoing collaboration with local residents and community leaders, building on a two-year planning process (2022–2024). Our planning phase involved a coalition of community, university, and systems partners who co-designed place-based strategies to create equitable access to the life sciences ecosystem, an initiative amplified by Pitt’s BioForge. Our priority areas include Pre-K to 12 education, workforce development, and inclusive community development.

These strategies are now being translated into action through numerous initiatives focused on STEAM education for all ages, the creation of innovative workforce development programs to build new career paths, and increased resource sharing to support local residents. To learn more about our planning phase and initial concepts, you can view the Greater Hazelwood Kaleidoscope Summit, a culminating event where we shared our vision with the community.

What is the life sciences?

The life sciences are the fields of study that focus on living things. They help us understand how the natural world works, how our bodies function, the keys to good health and much more.

The life sciences industry researches, develops, and manufactures cutting-edge technologies that treat life-threatening diseases and health conditions. It can include medicine creation, food product evaluation, vaccine treatments, and much more.
